How to Watch: No. 7 Tennessee vs. No. 1 Kansas in Maui Invitational third-place game

No. 2 Purdue sent No. 7 Tennessee to the consolation side of the Maui Invitational bracket on Tuesday. Now the Vols will get No. 1 Kansas in Wednesday’s consolation game.

The Vols (4-1) and Jayhawks (4-1) will play for a third-place finish in the tournament at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time Wednesday (TV: ESPN2) at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Tennessee beat Syracuse 73-56 to open the tournament on Monday, but Purdue handed the Vols their first loss of the season Tuesday night , 71-67. Kansas beat host Chaminade Monday but lost to No. 4 Marquette on Tuesday, after Marquette survived UCLA in the late game Monday.

Marquette and Purdue will play for the Maui Invitational championship at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Series History

Tennessee and Kansas had never faced one another in basketball until January 2009, but the two programs have played seven times since then.

Most recently, the Vols beat the Jayhawks 64-50 to win the Battle 4 Atlantis championship on Paradise Island in the Bahamas last November. Tennessee also beat Kansas 80-61 at Thompson-Boling Arena in January 2021 and again in Knoxville in January 2010, when the Jayhawks were ranked No. 1.

Kansas won in Lawrence in 2009 and again in January 2020. The Jayhawks won neutral-site games against the Vols in 2014, in Orlando in the Old Spice Classic, and 2018, in the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York.

The current Kansas team is led by center Hunter Dickinson , the Michigan transfer who scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a win over Tennessee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022.

How It Happened: Purdue 71, Vols 67

Dalton Knecht scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half and Jordan Gainey scored all 15 of his in the second half, but Tennessee couldn’t find enough offensive answers in the second half to get past No. 2 Purdue.

The Boilermakers got 27 points from Fletcher Loyer and 23 points and 10 rebounds from Zach Edey . Purdue went 29-for-48 at the foul line, the most free throws attempted by a Tennessee opponent during the Rick Barnes era.

Purdue shot 54.2% in the second half after shooting just 20.0% in the first half. The Vols were 9-for-30 from from the floor in the second half.

Jahmai Mashack scored nine points and Santiago Vescovi had eight, but Vescovi battled foul trouble. Jonas Aidoo Tobe Awaka both fouled out as the Vols were called for 30 fouls as a team.

Josiah-Jordan James had three points in 34 minutes, Aidoo finished with five and Awaka had six. Zakai Zeigler had five points on 2-for-11 shooting.
