ANAHEIM - Following a hard-fought win, the Detroit Red Wings head out west for a trio of games in California, beginning on Friday night with a matchup against the Anaheim Ducks.

  • The Red Wings began this current stretch of away games in the Steel City on Wednesday night. In taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit used some excellent goaltending from Cam Talbot to force overtime, with Simon Edvinsson scoring on former Grand Rapids Griffins teammate Alex Nedeljkovic to seal the 3-2 victory , snapping the team's short two-game losing skid.

While it was against a struggling team like the Penguins, the gutsy effort the Wings put together is another example of how this team is different from years past. They just need to show it on a more consistent basis. Detroit is now sixth in the Atlantic Division in winning percentage (.500).

The Ducks are still in the midst of their long rebuild. Even with some exceptional young talent like Mason McTavish, Cutter Gauthier and Trevor Zegras, the team still is unable to play like a potential playoff threat. This is the final game of a six-game homestand for Anaehim, and it has not gone well. The Ducks have dropped four of their last five games at the Pond, including a 3-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

This is the first of two meetings between the Wings and Ducks, with the teams splitting the regular-season series last year.
