Hull KR bid to rename road for Phil Lowe backed

A rugby club's bid to name the road outside its stadium after a former player can go ahead in principle, councillors agreed.

Hull KR asked Hull City Council whether it could change the name of Poorhouse Lane to Phil Lowe Way in honour of the player who died in March.

Members of the council's East Area Committee agreed in principal to the name change at a meeting on Tuesday.

A statutory consultation into the name change will now take place.

The suggestion of the name change was announced by Hull KR chairman Paul Sewell in a speech at the club's awards night in September, and was welcomed by Lowe's son, Andy Lowe, on social media.

The club's stadium, Craven Park, is on Poorhouse Lane but the club said the road's name "does little to reflect the character of the area or the aspirations of the club to invest and enhance the area".

Hull-born Lowe was a second-row forward who played for the club from 1967 to 1983, apart from a two-year stint in Australia at Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles from 1974 to 1976, when he won the New South Wales premiership with the Sydney club.
