Humane Society of Sullivan County at max capacity during the holidays
SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Humane Society of Sullivan County is at max capacity housing over 140 animals.
The shelter only has space for about 100 animals, with 42 dog kennels and 55 cat kennels. But currently they are housing 86 cats, and 59 dogs. Being over capacity increases stress on the animals and increases the chance of spreading diseases.
Board President of the shelter Society Julie Tow said they usually see an increase of intakes around the holidays, especially senior dogs. She said they have had instances where families will surrender their senior pet for a new puppy or kitten for Christmas.
Tow also said there are many ways people can help with the increase of animals.
"People don't spay and neuter their pets. They believe that their one pet is not going to make a difference, but it does. When you allow your female to have puppies and then you want to give them away to your family or friends, or you post free to a good home. Chances are good that puppy is not going to get a good home, but chances are even greater that those puppies are not going to be spayed or neutered so there going to have puppies. And then when those puppies get old enough they're going to have puppies. So, it goes on and on and on."
Other ways to help the shelter is by donating or adopting. They also have a weekend warrior program where families can take a pet home for the weekend to see if it is a good fit. For more information about that program or adopting an animal you can contact them at 812-268-4201.
