‘I deserve answers’: Bradenton woman still has massive hole in apartment roof after Milton

BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — A Bradenton woman has been living with a massive hole in her apartment complex for nearly a month.

Kimberly Alexandre said the roof was damaged from high winds during Hurricane Milton, but it still hasn't been repaired.

"I said I'm going to call every day until I get an answer," Alexandre said. "I never got that answer."

The staff said they were aware of the issue, but they were unable to share any additional details about the situation.

However, Alexandre is worried the condition of the unit is getting worse.

She reported that birds, bats, and insects have been infesting the attic since it's exposed to the elements.

"I deserve answers," Alexandre said. "Fix the roof, tarp it, or temporarily fix it. Fix the roof so we can continue to live here."

A Good Samaritan has stepped in to help the family, but he is worried about their health and well-being while they wait for repairs.

"We're going to get a lot of rain," Mike Gainey said. "There's going to be mold. It's going to be even more dangerous. Diseases. There's a number of things that can happen and it's completely unsafe."

"This is where we live," Alexandre said. "My mom, my dad, my husband. This is where we live."

"While the county did a windshield survey of damage in the area, roof damage is not easily seen from street level. According to county records, it does not appear that this damage was caught during the initial drive-by windshield damage assessment.

"These estimates are done to inform FEMA and other partners of community impact. These are not typically shared with property owners or tenants.

"The county damage assessments do not replace any required damage inspections of the property for insurance needs. It is up to the property owner to ensure that a damage estimate is properly conducted, and any mitigation/repair/rebuilding is done to regulations."
