‘I needed to turn my back on music. My childhood dreams lay shattered all around me.’ Jerry Fish on the break-up of An Emotional Fish

Gerald Whelan, aka Jerry Fish, saunters through the doors of a Kilkenny cafe –and a garda looks up from his coffee and does a double take. The former An Emotional Fish frontman looks all the world like the Peaky Blinders vaudevillian Arthur Shelby, played by Paul Anderson. Whelan, who lives nearby, walks towards me carrying a vinyl copy of his new album, Dreaming of Daniel. Daniel Johnston, who died in 2019 at the age of 58, is something of an idol for Whelan. Such is Whelan's devotion to the late Texan singer – often referred to as the "godfather of bedroom pop" – that since 2020, he, along with Fight Like Apes frontwoman MayKay (who sings on the album) have hosted a Hi, How Are You day in Dublin on January 22, Johnston's birthday.
