‘I was in the middle of a war’: Driver ducks as bullets hit vehicles at Memphis gas station

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– A man who stopped at a gas station along South Third Street to fill up his pickup truck Sunday night left with a bullet hole in his driver's side door and a blown-out tire.

The driver, who didn't want to be identified, said he was at pump number two at the Fill N Go when someone opened fire.

"I was in the middle of a war. I was like, wow," said the victim. "I ducked, and then I heard a ping. I just put my car in drive and drove with my head down."

Police said stray bullets also hit a Dodge Charger and the front windows of the gas station. Clerks inside the business told officers they pulled their hold-up alarm after they heard several gunshots but didn't see the suspects or their vehicle.

The pickup driver reported seeing a man run from the gas station and jump into a dark-colored vehicle, just before someone in the car began firing a gun.

"There was another guy who came behind the gas station and was shooting at them," he said. "They shot my car."

He said he was shocked when he saw the bullet hole in his truck because it was so close to his head.

"I was ducking down, and a bullet was right by my head, but it didn't go through," the victim said. "I was blessed, not lucky."
