I went to Midland in search of a controversial statue. I found a mother and son’s artistic ensemble instead.

MIDLAND, MI – Standing several feet away, I could see what people were talking about. Positioned at the end of a dead-end offshoot of Waldo Road, there was what appeared to be a stone creation standing several feet above me. It had one arm drooped at its side. Another was extended outward.

This was supposed to be what I had driven to this unmarked street to find: a statue of Adolf Hitler, something I was sure was done in poor taste and required an explanation in the year 2024. But as is often the case with local tales, this lore of there being a statue of Hitler in the southern part of the city of Midland was just a rumor.
