Iconic retailer to close last full-sized store in United States

In news that will surely make the 1980s babies — and folks born before then, too — at least a little sad, iconic retailer Kmart is slated to close its last remaining full-sized store in the continental United States.

The news comes via USA Today which reported that the last store, located in Bridgehampton, New York, is scheduled to close its doors for the final time on Oct. 20. There will be one store left in Miami, but USA Today said that is not a full-sized store, and that it has a "limited range of products."

USA Today reported that Kmart once had more than 2,000 locations around the country as it duked it out with Walmart in the retail giant game. The company merged with Sears in 2005, and per USA Today, it fell behind "as e-commerce grew and consumer preferences changed."

The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.

USA Today said there are also locations in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.

The site added that the Sears and Kmart merged company has shuttered more than 3,500 stores and laid off more than 250,000 jobs across the past 15 years.

The first Kmart store opened in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan.
