ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The Illinois Secretary of State's office is rolling out a new option for people wanting to renew their driver's license or obtain their vehicle stickers.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced on Friday this his office is rolling out "fast lane" DMV kiosks at retailers as part of a pilot program. The kiosks will serve as an alternate resource for those without online access or those with restrictive schedules, which make a trip to the DMV more difficult.

Instead, people can renew their licenses and get their vehicle stickers while shopping for groceries. This is a more convenient and less expensive option.

"This is a big step in our ongoing effort to modernize the office and enable Illinoisans to obtain more services online and remotely without having to visit a DMV," Giannoulias said.

According to Giannoulias, the average transaction time at the kiosks is just two minutes. They can print vehicle registration stickers for customers immediately on-site while customers seeking a driver's license or state ID card renewal will receive a temporary document to use while their new card is mailed to them within 15 business days.

New applicants for driver or vehicle services – including those applying for a REAL ID – will still be required to make an in-person DMV visit to ensure proper identity verification is conducted.

Only one kiosk is currently available in Central Illinois — at Springfield's Meijer, but Giannoulias plans to expand the program in the future. He said as the program expands, more services will be available, along with more languages in addition to English and Spanish.
