Illegal burning causes brush fire on College Highway in Southampton
SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – An illegal burn on College Highway sparked a brush fire Wednesday morning, prompting a response from local fire crews and aid.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near 377 College Highway and was ignited by a burn pile surrounding the brush.
The fire quickly spread, with Southampton's Brush 1 engine arriving at the scene and immediately requesting additional support to prevent further damage. Engine 4 soon followed, and the Westfield Fire Department provided mutual aid to ensure the fire was brought under control.
Firefighters were able to contain and fully extinguish the fire before it could cause damage to nearby structures or expand beyond the initial area. The Southampton Fire Department expressed appreciation to Westfield Firefighters Local 1111 for their quick assistance in handling the situation.
