Illinois man dies in crash after running stop sign in Green County
An Illinois man died in a crash after running a stop sign in the town of Spring Grove near Brodhead, the Green County Sheriff's Office reported.
The crash happened about 2 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Highway 81 and Highway T, just south of Brodhead, Lt. Nicole Grace said in a statement.
The preliminary investigation determined that a vehicle was heading south on Highway T when it didn't stop at the intersection with Highway 81 and collided with an SUV that was heading west on Highway 81.
The 23-year-old Lena, Illinois man who was driving the vehicle than ran the stop sign had to be extricated from his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was wearing his seatbelt and the vehicle's airbags did deploy.
The 47-year-old Monroe woman who was driving the SUV was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.
No names were released.
The crash, which was Green County's third fatal crash of the year, closed the intersection for about 4 1/2 hours.
