In the region: UVa's Walsh breaks world record

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Olympic gold medalist Gretchen Walsh of the Virginia women's swimming and diving team broke a world record and four American records Friday in her squad's season-opening win over Florida.

With her leadoff leg in the 200-meter medley relay, Walsh broke the U.S. record in the 50 backstroke with a time of 25.37 seconds.

She broke the U.S. record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.89. She broke the U.S. mark in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.10.

In a time trial, Walsh broke the world and U.S. records in the 100 individual medley with a time of 55.98.

The No. 1 UVa women beat No. 3 Florida 181-119, while the No. 3 Florida men beat No. 14 UVa 231-69.

Mabrey Shaffmaster had 11 kills Friday to lead the visiting Tar Heels (14-2, 6-1 ACC) to a 28-26, 25-23, 25-21 win over the Hokies (7-10, 1-6).

Karli Shepherd had 13 kills and 13 digs Friday to lead the host Eagles (7-7, 4-0 Big South) to a 25-16, 16-25, 25-19, 25-18 win over the Highlanders (6-10, 3-2).

Avery Myers had 10 kills and 11 digs Friday to lead the host Generals (20-2, 9-0 ODAC) to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-14 win over the WildCats (9-11, 2-5).

SVU sweeps

The Knights (14-9, 10-1 USA South) swept a pair of matches on Friday in Brevard, N.C.

Brookelyn Madland had 17 kills to lead SVU to a 25-14, 25-15, 25-9 win over North Carolina Wesleyan.

Madland had 16 kills to lead SVU to a 25-22, 25-20, 26-24 win over Brevard.

FIELD HOCKEY

No. 4 UVa 3, No. 12 Syracuse 2

The host Cavaliers (11-2, 5-1 ACC) beat the Orange (10-4, 4-3) in a shootout Friday.

UVa's Jans Croon scored with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 2. Neither team scored in the two overtime periods.

After five rounds, the shootout was tied at 2. So the shootout went to sudden death. Each team scored in the sixth round. But in the seventh round, Syracuse missed its shot and UVa's Mia Abello scored to give the Cavaliers the win.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

SVU 4, Pfeiffer 0

Mabel Harris, Courtney Montes, Courtney Pack and Brynnly Julian scored to give the host Knights (6-6-3, 5-1-1 USA South) a win over the Falcons (3-9, 1-5) on Friday.

Taylor Huff, Solai Washington, Wrianna Hudson and Giana Riley scored to give the Seminoles (9-2-2, 4-2-1 ACC) a win over the visiting Cavaliers (10-5, 3-5) on Thursday night.

Riley Boucher of VMI (5-8-2, 1-5-1 SoCon) scored in the 61st minute to tie the game with the host Terriers (5-9-2, 1-5-1) on Thursday night.
