In the region: W&L men's soccer advances to Sweet 16 on PKs
BALTIMORE — The 21st-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team beat No. 15 Johns Hopkins after a penalty-kick shootout in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Sunday.
Ryan Sharpe of W&L scored in the first half, but the Blue Jays (13-3-5) tied the game in the 50th minute. Neither team scored in the two overtime periods.
W&L (14-3-5) won the shootout 4-2, with Lucas Pleasants, Willy Hall, Weyimi Agbeyegbe and PJ Ryan scoring for the Generals. Ryan's kick clinched the shootout and ended the game.
Will Joseph of W&L had a save to open the shootout.
W&L, which now owns the longest unbeaten streak (18 games) in program history, will meet No. 20 Williams in the Sweet 16 next weekend.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
W&L 3, Ohio Northern 0
LEXINGTON — Sarah Zimmerman and Elizabeth Zimmerman scored in the first half to give the ninth-ranked Generals (20-1-1) a win over the Polar Bears (15-6-1) in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Sunday.
Abby Groff had three saves for W&L, which will meet No. 11 William Smith in the Sweet 16 next weekend. W&L, which beat William Smith 2-0 in August, has made the round of 16 for the first time in 18 years.
W&L now owns the school mark for single-season wins, as well as the school record for the longest unbeaten streak (21 games).

Northwestern 3, UVa 2, OT
Lauren Wadas scored on a penalty corner 2:20 into overtime to give the second-seeded and second-ranked Wildcats (21-1) an NCAA quarterfinal win over the eighth-ranked and visiting Cavaliers (14-5) on Sunday.

Va. Tech men get NCAA bid
The Virginia Tech men's cross-country team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I national championships Saturday.
Tech is heading to the national meet for the first time in five years. Tech had finished fourth at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet last Friday, but only the top two teams earned automatic bids.
Virginia Tech's George Couttie had already earned an automatic bid to the national meet by winning the regional meet.
W&L women win NCAA regional
The 12th-ranked Generals won the NCAA Division III South Regional championship Saturday in Clinton, Miss.
W&L, which won the meet for the first time in five years, earned an automatic bid to the Division III national championships. W&L had 38 points; Emory was second with 49. Southern Virginia was ninth.
W&L's Olivia Warr won the race with a time of 21:34.7 on the 6K course. She became the team's first regional champ since 1995.
W&L's Cassie Carr was fourth (21:55.9), with Sophia Breschi seventh (22:11.3) and Emma Mitchell eighth (21:12.7). Mimi Kemp was 18th, Lydia Harvey 19th and Kristen Clodgo 25th.
SVU's Bayleigh Redd was 26th, with SVU's Heidi Barton 30th.
On the men's side, Lynchburg won the meet with 51 points to earn an automatic NCAA bid. W&L was third with 59 points. SVU was sixth and Roanoke eighth.
The 15th-ranked W&L men's team received an at-large NCAA bid Sunday. SVU's Kaelen Ruder, who was 18th at the regional meet, reaped an individual NCAA bid Sunday.
W&L's Keaton Rush was fourth at the regional meet with a time of 24:57.17 on the 8K course. W&L's Row Sterne was fifth (24:58.1), with Robert Cooper sixth (25:00.72). Thomas Franklin was 20th, with Jackson Kodenski 24th and William Dunaway 25th.
SVU's Kedryn Chandler was 27th. Roanoke's Matt Garis was 31st. SVU's Joseph Hughes was 33rd.

The visiting Maroons won eight of the 10 bouts to open the season with a victory Saturday.
Josh Noble and David Reid of Roanoke each pinned his foe.
