Incumbent candidates win reelection to Saginaw County Board of Commissioners

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI – Incumbent candidates dominated the seven contested races for the Saginaw County Board of Commissioners in the 2024 general election on Tuesday, Nov. 5. In District 2, Democrat and incumbent commissioner Jack Tany defeated Republican opponent Chet Atkins with 63.51% of the total vote, according to unofficial results. Tany began serving on the board of commissioners in 2021. District 2 includes Carrollton, Kochville and Zilwaukee townships as well as the city of Zilwaukee and a portion of the city of Saginaw. Republican and incumbent commissioner Rich Spitzer won the close race for District 3, defeating Democrat Tarsha Works with 50.48% of the votes cast. Spitzer has served on the board of commissioners since 2023 as its sole Republican. District 3 represents portions of Saginaw Township. In the race for the board's District 4 seat, Democrat and incumbent commissioner Sheldon Mathews defeated Republican Herb Jankowsky with 63.43% of the votes cast. Mathews joined the board in 2019 and serves as its vice chair. District 4 consists of Spaulding and Bridgeport townships as well as a portion of the city of Saginaw. Democrat and incumbent commissioner Gerald Little was victorious in the race for the board's District 8 seat, defeating Republican Terie Elbers with 75.02% of the votes cast. Little has served on the board since 2021. District 8 includes Blumfield and Buena Vista townships as well as parts of the city of Saginaw. In District 9, Democrat and incumbent commissioner Christopher S. Boyd defeated Republican challenger Jane Collins with 60.93% of the votes cast. Boyd has been on the board since 2021 and currently serves as its chair. District 9 consists of portions of Saginaw Township and the city of Saginaw. Democrat and incumbent commissioner Lisa Coney defeated Republican James Shepler with 59.20% of the votes cast in Tuesday's race for the board's District 10 seat. Coney has been representing District 10 since 2023. District 10 includes parts of Saginaw Township and the city of Saginaw. In District 11, Democrat and incumbent commissioner Michael Webster came out on top, defeating Republican Walter J. Ribble with 61.21% of the votes cast. Webster began serving on the board in 2017. District 11 represents parts of Saginaw Township and the city of Saginaw. Republican John L. Kaczynski as well as incumbent Republican council members Mark Piotrowski, Tracey Slodowski, and Denny Harris ran unopposed in races for four of the 11 seats on the board in this election.
