Incumbents split in Richmond City Council race: one winning, one losing, one retiring

n Richmond, a City Council incumbent was losing, another was winning, and a third is retiring, according to early returns from Tuesday's election.
In District 1, incumbent Melvin Lee Willis Jr. (618 votes) was losing to challenger and educator Jamelia Brown (741 votes) 40.12% to 47.95%. Mark Wassberg was in third in District 1 with 11.98% (185 votes).
In the race to replace retiring District 5 Councilmember Gayle McLaughlin, Sue Wilson was leading comfortably over Ahmad Amderson 58.1% to 41.86%. Wilson was endorsed by McLaughlin while Anderson is the son of two former Richmond mayors — Irma Anderson and Rev Booker T. Anderson.
In District 6, incumbent Claudia Jimenez was ahead of Shawn Dunning 56.88% (2.021 votes) to 43.12% (1,532 votes).
