Inland college notes: Cal Poly Pomona soccer teams could determine rivals’ postseason fate
Cal Poly Pomona's soccer program has the potential to determine its rivals' postseason fate.
The Broncos men's and women's teams have already secured spots in the upcoming California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. Both can knock their Cal State San Bernardino counterparts out of playoff positioning on Thursday with wins against the Coyotes in a doubleheader at Kellogg Stadium beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Cal Poly Pomona's men's team has won 10-or-more matches for the 10th consecutive season and are still in play for the top seed for the CCAA tournament, which begins Nov. 10.
The Broncos (10-1-6 overall, 5-0-5 CCAA) are riding a 13-match unbeaten streak and are currently ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II.
They are in a three-way tie with Cal State L.A. (10-0-5, 5-0-5) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-4-5, 5-0-5) for first place and seeding will be determined based on Thursday's results.
Senior midfielder Max Laguna leads the team with seven goals and six assists in 16 appearances, and junior forward Mads Frederiksen was recently named CCAA player of the week after scoring in each of the Broncos' last three wins.
Cal State San Bernardino (5-5-6, 3-4-3) is among three teams still alive for the sixth and final spot in the tournament. The Coyotes need a win combined with losses by Cal State East Bay (5-7-4, 4-3-3) and Stanislaus State (7-5-5, 3-3-4) to qualify.
Cal Poly Pomona's women's team started the season with a 14-match unbeaten streak and is locked in as the No. 1 seed for the CCAA tournament.
The Broncos (14-1-2, 7-1-2) have won six of their last eight matches and are currently ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II.
Finishing the regular season with three consecutive matches at home after their first loss of the season – 2-0 at Stanislaus State on Oct. 27 – Pomona got a 1-0 victory against Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday, Nov. 1 and a 2-0 win over Sonoma State on Sunday, Nov. 3.
Junior attacking mid Vanessa Cruz leads the CCAA with 10 goals, and Tara Oper (Arlington) has four goals and a team-high five assists this season.
Cal State San Bernardino (5-5-6, 4-3-3) is among five teams vying for the final three spots in the tournament. The Coyotes trail Cal State East Bay (9-5-3, 5-3-2) and are one point ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay (6-3-7, 3-2-5), Cal State San Marcos (7-5-5, 4-4-2) and Cal Poly Humboldt (7-7-3, 4-4-2) heading into the regular season's final day.
CBU'
California Baptist University junior Elijah Griffin is off to a strong start at 141 pounds.
Griffin, who competed the last three seasons at 125 pounds before making the jump this season to 141, was the only CBU wrestler to earn a victory when the Lancers hosted nationally-ranked Indiana at the Fowler Event Center on Friday, Nov. 1.
Griffin got out to a 7-0 lead before going on to take down Indiana's Henry Porter 16-7 via major decision for four early points, but it was CBU's only points in a 34-4 loss to the Hoosiers.
The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team has won 16 consecutive matches and shows no signs of slowing.
CCAA player of the week Samantha Campion had 11 kills, 15 digs, six aces and three blocks as the conference-leading Broncos grabbed a 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 victory over San Francisco State at Kellogg Arena on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Cal Poly Pomona (20-1 overall, 14-0 CCAA) is 7-0 at home this season and currently ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II with four matches remaining in the regular season.
SBVC GETS FIRST WIN
The San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team began a season with big expectations with a big victory.
The No. 2-ranked Wolverines had four players score in double digits in a 105-49 victory at home over L.A. Pierce on Saturday, Nov. 2. Khemanni Davis and Andre Speight had 16 points apiece, and Jason Lee had seven points, six assists and five rebounds in the win.
SBVC (1-0 overall) hosts the Alvin Hunter Classic this weekend and plays preseason No. 1 Fullerton on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m.
