BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — An inmate at North Kern State Prison, serving a life term for fatally stabbing his wife, was himself killed in a stabbing attack that authorities say was carried out by three other inmates.

Nick Vedol Lopez, 55, was attacked at 7:38 p.m. on Sunday in a recreation yard, according to a release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Correctional officers used pepper spray to stop the assault. Lopez died while being transported to a medical facility, coroner's officials said.

Jose Gonzalez, 48, Eric Servin, 37, and Alfred R. Rodriguez, 37, were identified as Lopez's assailants. Three inmate-manufactured weapons were recovered, according to CDCR.

An investigation was ongoing.

Lopez was serving life with the possibility of parole after being convicted of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his wife in Los Angeles County, according to Los Angeles media.

Gonzalez was sentenced in 2006 to life without parole for first-degree murder, according to CDCR. Both Servin and Rodriguez, sentenced in 2018 and 2008, respectively, are serving life with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder.

A judge recused himself Tuesday from presiding over Arizona's fake electors case after an email surfaced in which he told fellow judges to speak out against attacks on Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the presidency. In the Aug. 29 email, Maricopa County Judge Bruce Cohen lamented that he didn't speak out when Harris was called a "DEI hire," believes that white men must speak out against unfair treatment of women, and raised a historical lesson from the Holocaust about the need to speak up when people are attacked. Cohen didn't specify who made the comment regarding Harris.
