Interim Baxter Springs PD chief named

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — There's a new top badge in Baxter Springs today—at least for now.

City leaders chose Assistant Police Chief Jimmy Hamilton as the interim police chief. He'll be taking over for Brian Henderson.

Last week, voters elected Henderson as Cherokee County's next sheriff . Henderson will still work with the P.D. but is stepping down as chief as he prepares for the transition to sheriff in January.

Hamilton has been with the Baxter Springs Police Department for several years and has also worked at the Galena and Columbus Police Departments and Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

The Philippines said on Wednesday it would not stand in the way if former President Rodrigo Duterte wants to surrender to the International Criminal Court, and would be obliged to comply with any international arrest warrant over his "war on drugs". During a congressional hearing on Wednesday into the bloody crackdown on narcotics that killed thousands of Filipinos, the mercurial Duterte said he was not scared of the ICC and told it to "hurry up" on its investigation into possible crimes against humanity. The office of the current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr issued a statement hours later indicating it would be willing to consider handing Duterte over if an Interpol request was made.

Republican Scott Baugh has conceded in his race against Democrat Dave Min in a Southern California U.S. House district, ending his bid to seize the seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. Katie Porter. In a post on the social media platform X Tuesday night, Baugh said "despite running a strong campaign ... that effort is going to come up a little short." The 47th District in Orange County, southeast of Los Angeles, was a top target for national Republicans looking to protect and possibly expand the party's narrow majority in the chamber.

Speaker Mike Johnson and top House Republicans took a victory lap as they returned to Washington on Tuesday on the heels of last week's election, saying they are ready on Day 1 to work on President-elect Donald Trump's agenda. "It is a beautiful morning and it is a new day in America," Johnson said from the Capitol steps surrounded by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Whip Tom Emmer and National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Rep. Richard Hudson. All eyes are also on Trump's transition and what lies ahead with a potential Republican "trifecta" in the nation's capital.

BERLIN (Reuters) -Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday appealed to parties to pass measures such as raising child benefits and lifting tax thresholds before a February snap election, stressing that Germans did not need to choose between security and prosperity. Scholz was addressing parliament in political leaders' first public head-to-head since the collapse of the chancellor's ruling coalition last week forced the country into a snap election that will likely take place in February. With parties already in election mode, Scholz is fighting an uphill battle to keep his job, with polls showing the conservative opposition led by Friedrich Merz set to gain power.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's Republicans on Tuesday inched closer to winning a majority in the House of Representatives and with it full control of Congress, which would give Trump power to advance his agenda when he returns to the White House in January. Edison Research projected Republicans had won one more race, giving them at least 216 seats, in striking distance of the 218 needed for the majority. On Tuesday, Republican Representative David Valadao and Democratic Representative Mike Levin, both of California, were reelected, Edison Research projected.
