GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Alachua County School Board has come to an agreement on who will temporarily take over superintendent Shane Andrew's role later this month. All five board members agreed Dr. Kamela Patton should become interim superintendent, while a national search for the permanent position continues. Patton was formerly superintendent in Collier County. She was recognized as Florida's 2022′s Superintendent of the Year, working in school districts across the state until 2023. Patton was a finalist for AASA National Superintendent of the Year. "It took me quite a few hours to look at all the things that happened for the students, the community, and families in that area," said vice chair Leanetta McNealy. Board member Sarah Rockwell says she's impressed by Patton's experience with larger budgets, while Kay Abbitt commented on her drive to get the district in shape. "She feels like she can get a lot of procedures in place so that when the new superintendent comes in, it will be possibly an easier transition," said Abbitt. During public comment, some expressed concern about incoming board member Thomas Vu not being included in discussions. Board members reassured them Patton has no interest in filling the seat permanently. "She's willing to come, given everything she knows about Alachua County, she's willing to come," shared Chair Diyonne McGraw. Board members voted unanimously to enter negotiations with Patton, possibly discussing a proposed contract during their next board meeting this week. "I got the very distinct impression that her role here will be one that we desperately need at this particular juncture," said Tina Certain. Last month, the school board agreed to fire Andrew after presenting their evaluations. His final day is November 15.
