BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - An invasive clam has been found in Lake Champlain for the first time. Officials say a volunteer pulled the golden clam from a lakebed in Whitehall, New York, last month as part of a routine monitoring program. The hermaphroditic clams are native to the eastern Mediterranean and Asia. They crowd out native species and create more cyanobacteria blooms. The clam was confirmed in the region in 2008 in the Champlain Canal and has since also become established in Lake George and Lake Bomoseen. All three waterways drain into Lake Champlain. The discovery brings the known number of nonnative and aquatic invasive species in Lake Champlain to 52.
