‘It is breaking my heart’: Cultivate art space to close in Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids art studio, education center and gallery will close at the end of November.
Cultivate, which served the Grand Rapids community for three years, has announced it will be shutting its physical doors at the end of the month, according to owner Mallory Shotwell.
"This decision is not made lightly. It is breaking my heart. My heart wants this and loved this, but it is a multi-faceted reason for closing – including sustainability in the arts, capacity, and my health needs," a social media post read.
Cultivate was located along Wealthy Street and provided art education classes for people of all ages. Over three years, Shotwell said it served more than 10,000 artists, created 26 jobs, hosted 24 art exhibits and offered over 350 fine art classes. Most of the funds to operate the space came from the community.
"This experience has deepened my appreciation for art and the community we've built together," Shotwell said in an email sent to clients. "Thank you to each of you who cultivated art, education, and community alongside us, who shared your time, wisdom, and talents, and who trusted us with your children's growth and creativity."
The plan is for the building to close sometime by the end of November. Cultivate will sell off all its art supplies and equipment. Refunds will be given to those who signed up for classes that won't be running.
Shotwell said that the Cultivate website , where she shares tips and education on art, will still operate in the meantime as a resource.
