'It’s really nice to see responsible budgeting': Coatesville school board views bids for renovations

: Coatesville Area school board meeting, Oct. 8. School board members Elgin Bailey, Holly Charest and Shawna Maxwell were absent.

What happened: Bids for the new elementary school at the site of the former South Brandywine Middle School have come in lower than what the district budgeted for, the school board operations committee learned during a presentation on the master facilities plan.

The cost: The low bid for the new elementary school at the South Brandywine site is $52.95 million, Matt Kelly of ICS said, which is under the $61.15 million that was budgeted.

More facilities: Workers have completed most of the renovations at Scott Middle School, including the HVAC system, Kelly said during the presentation. The district will advertise for bids for other improvements at Scott, including architectural finishes, in November with work to be done next summer. Workers have also completed demolition of the South Brandywine Middle School, Kelly said. Last month, the district awarded contracts for the Reeceville Elementary School addition and the North Brandywine Middle School addition. In both cases, the bids came in under the budgeted amount.

What's next: The South Brandywine bids will come to the full board for approval. Renovations at King's Highway Elementary School are in the design process. The district plans to advertise those bids in February with approval in April.

: "It's really nice to see responsible budgeting that is a really good predictor of the amount of money we need to actually complete the project," board member Liz Muirhead said.
