Buffalorumblings

Jayden Daniels does something no one has done since Bills’ QB J.P. Losman

On Monday night, there were actually two games played. While the Buffalo Bills were obliterating the Jacksonville Jaguars , the Washington Commanders were putting together a complete win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

In that game, Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels threw his first NFL touchdown pass. What makes it unique is that it didn't go to a running back or a wide receiver or tight end. Daniels' first touchdown pass went to offensive lineman.

Offensive tackle Trent Scott reported as eligible for the play as the Commanders were inside the 1-yard line and looking to punch it in. Instead of running the ball with a back or Daniels, Scott blocked down for a second before releasing into the flat. Daniels lobbed the ball over the rusher and Scott smothered it for his first NFL touchdown.

Apparently this is the first time a QB's first NFL touchdown throw went to an offensive lineman since 2005, when second-year Bills quarterback J.P. Losman hit Jason Peters for a score.

Losman threw only 5 passes in his rookie season before taking over as the starter in year 2. In the season opener, the Bills started the game with four Rian Lindell field goals before a late first-half drive put them on the 1 with 30 seconds left. Peters reported as eligible and slipped into the end zone with Mark Campbell crossing from the other side. With immense pressure in his face following the play-action fake, Losman lofted it to a wide open Peters.

After going up 19-7, the Bills won 22-7 in the end.

Losman's next touchdown didn't come until November when he hit receiver Lee Evans for a pair of scores.

Peters entered the league as an undrafted tight end in 2004, but switched positions that offseason, eventually making his way to the active roster in November 2004. Peters was still in the NFL in 2023, playing 8 games for the Seattle Seahawks as a midseason replacement. Who knows if we could see him suit up again in 2024 as he continues pushing out his inevitable Hall of Fame voting into the future.

Hopefully Daniels has a better career than Losman, who after five lackluster years with the Bills spent one season as a backup with the Oakland Raiders and another with the Miami Dolphins.
