Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office starts program to recognize Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is offering a program to assist in the search of missing loved ones.

According to the JCSO, the Project Lifesaver program uses radio frequency technology to assists in the search. Participants in the program will be given a small arm bracelet with a radio frequency that allows deputies to locate them through a receiver device if they go missing.

"The bracelets are free of charge to the public thanks in part to different organizations in the community who have set aside funding for this project," JCSO Sgt. Cliff Avery said in a statement. "Once your loved one has been assigned a bracelet, at no cost, someone from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will contact you and arrange a time to install the bracelet and train their caregivers on how to use it."

Former U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, a New York Republican who resigned from Congress following a tax fraud conviction, is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament, according to friends who are raising funds to pay for the ex-lawmaker's medical care. Grimm, 54, suffered the devastating injury in September and is now being treated at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, where the late actor Christopher Reeve was treated after a similar equestrian accident in 1995, according to Vincent Ignizio, a friend of Grimm's who is a former New York City Council member. "It was a passion of his and he suffered a tragic accident at the end of September," said Ignizio, who has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for Grimm's medical care.

An arrest report gives more details about what occurred before a man was shot to death Wednesday in the 3200 block of West Edgewood Avenue. Investigators observed surveillance video that showed the victim driving an orange Chevrolet Camaro with orange rims at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and New Kings Road, according to the JSO arrest report for Lavertis Reed, 20, who was charged with murder in the shooting. As the victim's vehicle crossed the intersection, a white vehicle with dark rims was observed on the surveillance video driving south at a high rate of speed on New Kings Road, the arrest report states.
