Despite persisting high wind gusts, crews were able to drop buckets of water on the ridge throughout the day.

The voluntary evacuation for Wah-Ta-Wah Park is over but remains in effect for 120 Edgemere south to Woods Road, officials say.

The fire has burned 5,304 acres across New York and New Jersey.

Heavier rain is expected later this week, but officials caution that the soil in the burned area will be unstable and prone to erosion. There may be burned and decomposing trees in the damaged areas, and mud and burned debris could run off into local waterways, causing discoloration.

A statewide burn ban is still in effect.
