Living Jimmy Carter's Former Family Farmhouse Goes Up For Sale For $3M

An old Tudor-style home that was once owned by the family of President Jimmy Carter is on sale for £2.25 million, or just over $3 million.

The property, named The Pale Farm, has a number of standout elements including wooden ceiling beams, a bright sunroom, exposed brick walls, and a classic manicured garden.

The house is located in The Street in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire, England, and is "reputed to be the oldest house in the village," Steven Spencer, head of office at Savills Rickmansworth, told Newsweek.

"The Pale Farm is surely one of the finest Tudor-style homes in the area. Dating back in part to the 16th century, the property is steeped in history and has a wealth of period features including an imposing square chimney above the inglenook fireplace, oak internal doors and exposed timbers," he said.

The home has an open-plan kitchen living room with a vaulted ceiling, four bedrooms , two bathrooms, a cellar, three reception rooms, a sunroom, and around 0.5 acres of secluded gardens. There is also a two-bedroom annex with a living room and bathroom on the grounds of the property.

Its current owners, lawyers John and Diana Uff, have lived in the house for 20 years and are now downsizing as their children and grandchildren get older. Speaking of the history of the house, John Uff told Newsweek: "It has been in the past two separate houses which are now linked together."

The first, he says, was built back in 1500. "Attached to it now is another house probably about 50 years younger," he explained.

In the 16th century, the house was owned by miller and brewer Thomas Carter, a relative of the Carter family who later emigrated to the U.S. There were once hopes for Carter, the 39th president of the U.S., to visit the house but the plans never came to fruition.

Carter was president between 1977 and 1981. He was born James Earl Carter, Jr in 1924 in Plains, Georgia, with mostly English ancestry.

Carter will turn 100 years old on October 1 with celebrations and tributes being organized all across Georgia. A special concert will be held in his hometown of Plains, organized by the Friends of Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, with members of his family expected to be in attendance.

The former president entered hospice care in February 2023 and previously joked that he is "only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris " in the upcoming presidential election in November.

According to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, Thomas Carter Sr. came to the US in 1637 from England to Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

Five generations later, Kindred Carter moved to Georgia and one of his descendants, Jimmy Carter, was born over 100 years later.

According to the listing, descendants of Jimmy Carter also once owned the property and farmed extensively in the area, becoming well-known within the community.

The house itself extends to around 4,000 square feet. Additionally, there is a large timber-framed barn of about 1,300 square feet. In the garden, there are lawn areas and hidden walkways.

"Offered for sale with no upper chain, rooms of note include an impressive drawing and dining room and a magnificent vaulted kitchen/family room with underfloor heating, tiled floors and double gas-fired Aga," said Spencer.

The Pale Farm is located in the center of the village, close to the cricket field, four pubs, cafes, and the local store. It is also accessible from London by the M25 freeway and the nearby Chorleywood railway station.
