JoDean Joy, long-time opponent of gambling in South Dakota, passed away

H.Wilson23 min ago

A woman from Miller who led multiple efforts to limit or eliminate gambling in South Dakota has passed away.

The state lottery first started in South Dakota in 1986, with the video lottery machine gambling added three years later. Joy's anti-gambling campaigns spanned the 1980s and 1990s and targeted the statewide lottery as well as gambling in Deadwood. She often cited her main opposition to gambling as being the negative effect it has on individuals and families– both financially and emotionally.

The funeral for JoDean Joy will be 10:30am, Saturday (Oct. 19) at Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller. Burial will follow at G.A.R. Cemetery at Miller.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with JoDean's arrangements. Visit www.familyfuneralhome.net
