The college said the appointment was effective July 1, before saying that Hampton brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the college.

Hampton, a Stillman College alumnus, currently serves as president of Spire Energy for Alabama and Mississippi.

"Becoming the Chair of the Board of Trustees at Stillman is very humbling but also exciting," Hampton said. "Humbling when I think about the history of this great college and the many generations of students and faculty who were totally focused on providing equity and opportunity to people of color. Humbling in the sense that I lead a group of leaders whose focus is on strategically creating pathways for students to have the resources to become the future leaders of this state and country. But excited to work closely with Dr. Page and this team of leaders, faculty, and staff members who will take Stillman College to levels of success that have never been realized."

A 1997 graduate with a degree in physics, Stillman College says Hampton's connection to the school runs deep after he earned a full scholarship through the Stillman Choir and later completed a dual-degree program. Through this program, Hampton obtained an engineering degree from the University of Alabama. Hampton also holds a master's degree in business from Troy University.

"My hope is for Stillman College to become the preferred HBCU destination for graduating high school students living in Alabama and the southeast region," he said. "I'm focused on supporting the President's vision in growing the degree programs being offered to students; increasing student enrollment, updating campus facilities, and providing the athletics and social opportunities that attract future Stillmanites to our great campus. I'm also looking to connect with our Stillman alumni in order to increase our presence and support to Stillman."

Joe Hampton and his wife Jenise, also a Stillman alum, have two sons: Joseph II and Jonathan.

Stillman Collegte said other officers included Theresa Spralling, a former AT&T executive, who will serve as vice chair; Natalie Kelly, Brasfield Gorrie's vice president of Corporate Responsibility, will serve as secretary; and Jim Koon, director of Finance at Synod of Lakes and Prairies of Presbyterian Church USA, will serve as treasurer.
