John V. Olmstead

August 5, 1952 - May 17, 2024

SAN ANTONIO, TX - John V. Olmstead passed away on May 17, 2024, at age 71, at his longtime home in San Antonio, TX.

Born in Madison, WI, on August 5, 1952, to Clarence and Rhea Olmstead, John graduated from West High School and attended the University of Wisconsin where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and African American Studies. He then went on to serve his country for more than twenty years in the Army Medical Corps, rising to the rank of Major and earning numerous honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Service Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Army Service Ribbon.

After a distinguished military career, John earned his teaching certificate at Texas State University and spent the next twenty-five years as a devoted high school teacher and coach of multiple sports in San Antonio where his dedication to his students was a testament to his belief in the power of education and the importance of individual development. John loved reading and running and had an irrepressible love of sports and his favorite teams, particularly the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs.

Above all John was devoted to his family - his beloved wife of fifty years Han Olmstead, his daughter Marika Olmstead, son Walter Olmstead and grandson Jonah Olmstead, all of San Antonio and all whom survive him along with his siblings: Nancy Olmstead of Cross Plains, WI, and Clary Olmstead of New York City.

Memorial services for John were held on June 4, 2024, at Porter Loring North Funeral Home and at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
