John T. “Jack” McGavin Jr., 81, of Gateway Court, Edwardsville, formerly
of Liberty Street, Newtown section of Hanover Township, died Friday at his
residence.
Born Feb. 7, 1920 in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late John T., Sr.
and Helen (O’Donnell) McGavin. He was a graduate of Coughlin High School. He
was an insurance agent with Allstate Insurance Co. for 35 years. He was a U.S.
Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Ignatius
Church, Kingston, and former member of St. Leo the Great Church, Ashley. He
was past president of the Hanover Township Lions Club and member of the
Knights of Columbus Lady of Czestochowa Council 3987, Luzerne, and the Wm. J.
Hafey Council Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and life member of the
American Legion Post 673, Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, the Rev. William, OFM, and
Thomas.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Marion Kellie; sons, Dr.
John T., III, Griffin, Ga.; Nathaniel, Vernon, N.J.; Michael and William
“Buzzy,” both of the Newtown section of Hanover Township; and James,
Wilkes-Barre; daughters, Patricia McCue, Wilkes-Barre; Karen Garling, Monroe,
Mich.; Marian Morris, Nanticoke; Ann Marie Hufford, Pringle; and Joanne
Hummel, Shavertown, Kingston Township; 21 grandchildren; brothers, Paul, West
Palm Beach, Fla.; sisters, Mary George, Shavertown; Helen Foley, Ephrata; and
Elizabeth McDonald, Toms River, N.J.; nieces and nephews.



The funeral will be at 9:45 a.m. Monday from the Leo P. Lehman Funeral
Home, 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30
a.m. at St. Ignatius Church. Monsignor Neil J. Van Loon, pastor, will
officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends
may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to
Mercy Hospice, 25 Church St., Wilkes-Barre, 18702.
