JOPLIN, Mo. — It's day one for Joplin city leaders as they begin a three-day work session on the 2025 fiscal budget.

Department managers and council members began at city hall Monday night (9/23) with an overview of the nearly $214 million proposed budget, which is more than $35 million more than the current fiscal year.

The proposed budget includes millions of dollars for new equipment and personnel. $900 thousand is allocated to broadband network, to be constructed by Allo Fiber.

On the personnel side — seven new positions include two new police officers and one additional park ranger.

The Joplin Police Department is also asking for the implementation of an anonymous crime tip line, as well as two e-bikes for patrolling downtown.

Tuesday and Wednesday's work session will focus on budget issues and additional items.

"Each department presents the budget proposal, and all the special funds are presented. We discuss some different items with the council which we call issues and options. It's a very comprehensive review. At the end of each night, we ask citizens if there are any questions or if they want to provide comments. We're trying to be as transparent as possible through the budget process," said Joplin City Manager, Nick Edwards.

The 2025 fiscal year begins November 1.

These sessions are live streamed on the city's website and recordings will be posted for review afterwards. You can watch those, HERE .
