‘Just because something’s on sale doesn’t mean it’s a good deal for you’: Expert offers advice to Kentuckians ahead of Black Friday

KENTUCKY ( FOX 56 ) — While most people’s attention is on the food they’ll be eating for Thanksgiving dinner, soon shoppers will be setting their alarms to be the first in line as Black Friday deals get underway.

According to the National Retail Federation , Black Friday is still the most popular day to shop, with 72 percent of Americans expected to hit the stores this year. That’s up from 69 percent in 2022.

“Black Friday, as always, is a great time to look for those big electronics, TVs, wireless headphones, and also those small kitchen appliances—the air fryers, the stand-up mixers.”

“There are some unexpected things to save on, as well as things like furniture and big-ticket baby items. If you’re expecting or somebody in your family or friends circles is expecting, car seats, strollers—all those really expensive pieces of gear are going to be on sale,” Rathner said.

While great deals won’t be hard to come by this Black Friday, it’s important to be smart with your money. Experts say having a plan and sticking to it is one of the most important things you can do this holiday season.

“Go into Black Friday with a budget, a plan, and a list. And that’s what you stick to. That way, you know ahead of time that you are spending money that you have available in your checking account to pay back when your credit card bill is due,” Rathner said. “Don’t go crazy at stores. This is not the time to do that. Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s a good deal for you.”

The best way to save money is not to spend it in the first place. “The second best way to save money is to buy an item on sale that you were going to buy anyway,” Rathner said.

If you plan to shop this Black Friday, popular retailers like Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Macy’s, and Dicks Sporting Goods all open their doors at 6 a.m.
