Howard’s value on transfer market
It’s still early and we could see lots of experienced quarterbacks become available over the next week, but Howard is going to get lots of offers now that he’s officially available. He’s a smart, respected leader who made 27 starts during his career at Kansas State and has shown the ability to be a dual-threat playmaker with 5,786 career passing yards plus 1,150 rushing yards (excluding sacks) and 68 total touchdowns.
With more quarterbacks announcing their transfer decisions every day, it was smart to enter the portal now and get moving on his recruitment. — Max Olson, senior college football writer
What this means for Kansas State
Howard entering the portal has been rumored for a few weeks and doesn’t come as a huge surprise. The Wildcats already have their quarterback of the future in true freshman Avery Johnson , who put up 526 yards and scored nine touchdowns as Howard’s backup including a five-score day in a win at Texas Tech . Getting him 15 bowl practices as their new QB1 should be a real positive for his long-term development.
K-State backup Jake Rubley also announced Monday he’s entering the portal, so the depth in that room is taking a hit with Jacob Knuth and Adryan Lara left to back up Johnson for the bowl game. — Olson
What he said
“I am eternally grateful to my family and friends for the unwavering support they have shown along my athletic and academic journey,” Howard said in a statement. “What that being said, I am going to explore the transfer portal and evaluate all my options for next season. I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my life and the possibilities that lie ahead.”
