KCFD find man’s body while fighting fire following police standoff
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — KCPD reports that Friday afternoon, officers were called to a residence in the area of the 11500 block of North Cherry Street on reports of a suicidal person.
According to police, the caller was not at the residence but was concerned about a man who was inside. They reportedly believed he was suicidal based on previous contact they'd had with him.

KCPD says that when officers arrived, they made verbal contact with the man from a distance and attempted to get him to come outside. After a short period, those officers heard multiple gunshots from inside the residence.
Since KCPD believed the man was inside the residence alone, they reportedly backed away to protect those in the surrounding areas and to limit the chance of an escape. Further attempts to contact the man were unsuccessful.
Officers then called for Operation 100 police stand-off, bringing in additional resources and trained negotiators. According to KCPD, tactical officers with rescue vehicles arrived to evacuate surrounding residents and worked to arrange for a safe departure for students at a nearby school, which was placed on a lock and teach.
Negotiation efforts resumed following the school departure, officers also claimed to continue hearing gunfire from inside the residence.
KCFD also responded to the scene, as police reported that the residence was on fire. Shortly after 5 p.m., KCFD says they responded to the scene to put the fire out.
KCFD claims that due to a potentially hostile man still inside the residence, they were forced to try and put the fire out from a distance.
KCFD also says that they're still waiting for police to clear the house to begin overhaul operations, and KCPD claims that the fire is still ongoing. KCFD says they are unsure if there is a fatality or not.
Around 8:45 p.m., KCPD used robot and drone video to approach the back of the residence and clear the backyard. KCPD says the man was not located in this area.
According to police, KCFD has now moved closer to deploy more water to fight the fire.
Around 9:45 p.m., KCPD said that while KCFD was moving closer to the residence, they found the man dead in the front of the home. Once the fire is extinguished the death investigation will continue.
This is an ongoing investigation, FOX4 will provide updates as they're made available.
