KCTCS awards thousands of GEDs to inmates over 5 years

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Kentucky Community and Technical College System is celebrating the more than 4,000 inmates who've earned their GEDs over the last five years. At no cost, these individuals can reenter society with credentials that can help them build better lives and lower recidivism rates. KCTCS President Dr. Ryan Quarles says the state's community and technical colleges, like BCTC, are the largest providers and facilitators of GEDs across Kentucky. "We educate all Kentuckians including those who've had some bumps in the road," said Quarles. "As they exit the criminal justice system, now they have a GED, which will help them find a job," said Quarles. Quarles says it's been proven that there are positive outcomes when an incarcerated individual has educational opportunities. "Not only do they have a trade that may lead to a job, but we know that Kentuckians who leave the criminal justice system and have a job are less likely to return and that's good policy for Kentucky," said Quarles. Over the last five years, they've not only handed out thousands of GEDs to inmates, but Quarles says their overall adult enrollment in GED prep classes has increased to over 14,000. "Over 290,000 Kentuckians do not have their high school diploma," said Quarles. Adult education directors said it might take time for inmates to get motivated to attend classes, but when they do, they become very engaged in learning. "We don't care about peoples' backgrounds. We accept Kentuckians for who they are whether it's in our addiction treatment clinics, whether it's in jails or prisons or helping those that never finished high school." Quarles says if you or someone you know wants to finish their high school degree, they can find more information through KCTCS.
