Kearney Catholic's No. 2 doubles finishes fourth at state
LINCOLN — Kearney Catholic's No. 2 doubles team of Oliver Sharp and Jackson Dunham took fourth place Friday at the Class B state high school tennis tournament.
Sharp and Dunham reached the semifinals where they lost to Elkhorn Mount Michael's Dominic Beninato and Peter Killeen, the bracket's top seed and eventual champions, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-3.
Beninato and Killeen won the championship match 6-1, 6-2 to finish the year 35-2. The only set they lost at state came at the hands of Sharp and Dunham.
Falling into the consolation bracket and facing second-seeded Max Beard and DeShawn Striplin of Elkhorn, the Stars' duo won the second set 6-0 but lost the first and third sets by 6-2 scores.
Sharp and Dunham finished the year with a 32-8 record.
Also for the Stars, the No. 1 doubles team of Will Hogeland and Nash Malone won their first-round match on Thursday before being eliminated in the second round.
Elkhorn Mount Michael won the team championship with 58 points. Kearney Catholic and Lexington were in a three-way tie for 14th place with 10 points.
The Class A state tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday.
