Kiernan Shipka is recalling a "big Christmas mishap."

The actress, 24, has no problem remembering a Christmas-related disaster while on the Sunday, Nov. 3, red carpet for the Berlin, Germany, premiere of her new movie Red One . "I drank so much with my friends one night, and I woke up the next day and I had — I tell you — a massive hump on my nose," she said.

Demonstrating the mysterious facial injury, she says, "My nose literally went out a little and then back in."

How did such an unfortunate incident occur? "I don't know if I fell," responds Shipka. "Unclear how it happened. It lasted a couple of weeks. It was a big Christmas mishap."

Still, in the holiday spirit, she continues, "You know, we live, we learn, we have fun."

Red One, in theaters Nov. 15, stars the Mad Men alum alongside Dwayne Johnson , Chris Evans , Lucy Liu , Bonnie Hunt and J.K. Simmons . From director Jake Kasdan and writers Chris Morgan and Hiram Garcia, the holiday action-comedy centers on a high-tech Santa's covert present-delivering operations being threatened on Christmas Eve by Grýla — a vengeful medieval entity played by Shipka.

"I never really played a classic villain before," reflects the actress. "It felt like intimidating shoes to fill. I drew inspiration from a lot of different places. A lot of random stuff."

Simmons, 69, similarly found the part of Old Saint Nick "intimidating." He tells PEOPLE that the role has "been played by some wonderful, wonderful actors and I was glad that this was a very different take on it."

Codenamed Red One, the character is "not what people might expect," teases the Oscar winner. "It says in the script in the first description of Santa that he's not exactly ... jolly. And I thought that really helped me."

Shipka calls Simmons an "amazing" scene partner. "He's so supportive. I mean, everyone — it's heavyweights, this whole cast. Everyone is so good. And I was just watching, observing, exploring."
