King’s Takes Loss But Wins Volleyball Tourney

WILKES-BARRE – The host Lady Monarchs lost for the first time in the six
years their school has run the King’s College Invitational women’s volleyball
tournament on Saturday.

But it didn’t stop the host team from winning its sixth consecutive
tournament title.
King’s fell 3-1 to Marywood, snapping a 26-match tournament win streak, but
rebounded with a 3-0 win over Keystone to finish the two-day event 3-1 and
tied with Wilkes and Marywood. The Lady Monarchs, however, won the title via
the third tiebreaker, point differential. Wilkes was second and Marywood
third.

Katie Carr and Diane Lucas represented King’s on the all-tournament team,
joining Wilkes’ Nicole Hahn and Alicia Vieselmeyer and Marywood’s Lauren
Warburton. Kate Paschak of Marywood, which also fell to Wilkes on Saturday,
was named the tournament MVP after posting 13 kills and four blocks against
King’s.

Carr totaled 29 digs, 15 kills and 15 service points and Lucas tallied 36
digs in the Monarchs’ two matches. Also for King’s (4-1 overall), Jessica
Kandefer had 25 digs and 16 kills, Elene DiGrado added 28 service points and


Wilkes (3-1 overall) beat Marywood thanks to 24 kills and 14 digs from
Megan Riley, a team-leading 57 assists from Hahn and 15 kills and 23 digs from
Vieselmeyer. The Lady Colonels also downed Misericordia 3-1 on Saturday,
getting 13 kills apiece from Riley (19 digs) and Vieselmeyer (23 digs). Hahn
also had 45 assists and 18 digs in that win.



FIELD HOCKEY

Wilkes 11, Marywood 1

KINGSTON – Erin Henry scored four times and Melissa Quinn added three goals
and an assist for host Wilkes, which advanced to the final of the Wilkes Field
Hockey Invitational at Artillery Park.

The Lady Colonels face Neumann College, which beat Washington and Jefferson


Megan Farrell contributed two goals for Wilkes, which outshot Marywood 30-3
and held a 16-2 edge in penalty corners. Starting Lady Colonels goalie Hilary
Weber did not have to make a save. Jennifer Cole, Weber’s replacement in the
second half, stopped two shots.

King’s 5, Arcadia 2

GLENSIDE – Kelly Bowes scored twice and Amanda Jez tallied a school-record
four assists for King’s.

The Lady Monarchs (1-1) outshot Arcadia 34-10 and goalie Kerri Poltersdorf
made eight saves.

Suzanna Thompson opened King’s scoring off a Jez assist at 20:52 of the
first half. The Lady Monarchs took the lead for good with 24:01 left in the
game on Shelly Baron’s Jez-assisted goal.

Ursinus 3, Misericordia 0

DALLAS TWP. – Jamie Derr stopped 36 shots in goal for Misericordia in its
season-opening loss.

MEN’S SOCCER

King’s 2, Lincoln 1

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Brett Shipe scored the game-winner with just 2:00
remaining to give help King’s move on to the title game of the Brockport
University Invitational Tournament.

Mike McGarry’s unassisted goal gave the Monarchs (1-1) a 1-0 lead at 29:36
of the first half.

Misericordia 3, Keystone 0

DALLAS TWP. – Eric Bilger, Colin Hynes and Steve Keifer scored goals for
Misericordia, which held a 22-6 edge in shots on goal.

Cougars goalie Kevin Franco needed to stop just two shots.

Lebanon Valley 1, Wilkes 0

ANNVILLE – Mike Martin’s goal at the 82:47 mark dropped Wilkes to 1-1 on
the season.

Wyoming Valley West graduate Dominik Proctor had one save in goal for the
Colonels.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Misericordia 2, Lebanon Valley 0

DALLAS TWP. – Cole Vennie and Mike Bedics scored the goals and Carmie Del
Pizzo and Emi Yorozu had the assists for Misericordia, which outshot Lebanon
Valley 20-4.

Kathleen Schwarz made three saves to earn the shutout for the Lady Cougars.

CROSS COUNTRY

SCRANTON – Senior Chris Wadas finished second overall with a time of 27:59,
helping Misericordia’s men to a second-place team finish in the Marywood
Invitational.

Sophomore Mike Petrikonis, a Coughlin graduate, finished fourth in 28:43,
while freshman Steve Beecher took seventh in 29:40 in a field of 54.

Misericordia’s women’s team was led by Christine Manfredonia’s 13th-place
finish (23:11). Both the men’s and women’s teams will be at Lebanon Valley
College next Saturday for the Lebanon Valley Invitational.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Marywood 8, Misericordia 1

DALLAS TWP. – Mallory Beiber picked up Misericordia’s lone win at No. 1
singles.

For Marywood, Jennifer Whaley and Jamie Valis won both singles and doubles
matches.

Drew 9, Wilkes 0

MADISON – Cassie Malone came closest to victory for Wilkes, losing 6-4, 7-6
(7-3) at No. 4 singles in both teams’ season-opener.

HIGH SCHOOLS

BOYS SOCCER

Meyers 2, Pittston Area 1

WILKES-BARRE – Mike Hromchak scored from point-blank range in the 97th
minute to lift Meyers to the win.

Hromchak’s goal, assisted by Brian Flaherty, came in double overtime for
the Mohawks, who outshot Pittston Area 25-17 and held a 10-2 advantage in
corner kicks. Flaherty stopped 16 shots before he was pulled out of goal late
in the game.

Scott Nordheim tied the game in the 42nd minute. Pittston Area was issued a
red card for a hand ball inside the penalty area and Nordheim connected on the
penalty kick.

Pittston Area’s James Bell scored the game’s first goal in the 29th minute
on an assist from Chucky Thomas. Teammate Sam DeAlba made 23 saves.



Coughlin 2, Dallas 1

DALLAS – Steve Ference scored on a chip shot from 15 yards out at the 79:58
mark to lift Coughlin to a dramatic victory over Dallas on Friday.

The game was scoreless until the 74th minute, when Coughlin’s Ryan Symons
scored. Three minutes later, Dallas’ Jason Brakefield evened the game.



Tunkhannock 1, Lake-Lehman 0

LEHMAN TWP. – Tunkhannock’s Marcus Kristunas scored the game-winning goal
with less than 15 minutes to play on Friday.



Seton 6, Berwick 0

BERWICK – Dustin Clarke scored three goals and added an assist as Seton
Catholic defeated Berwick in a Division II game.

Matt Wisniewski scored twice for the Eagles and Jim Sulena added the other
goal. Steve Baker made 14 saves in goal to get the shutout for Seton, plus he
had an assist on one of Clarke’s goals.



FIELD HOCKEY

Crestwood 3, Upper Perkiomen 0

WRIGHT TWP. – Samantha Parks, Amie Survilla and Elizabeth Drazdowski scored
goals to lead Crestwood past Upper Perkiomen.



It was a nonleague game featuring two of the top programs in the state.
Crestwood is the defending PIAA Class 2A state champion. Upper Perkiomen was a
PIAA Class 3A quarterfinalist last season, losing to eventual champion Wyoming
Valley West in overtime.



Parks gave the Comets a 1-0 lead with 5:12 left in the first half by
converting a penalty stroke. Crestwood made it 2-0 less than one minute later
on a goal by Survilla. Drazdowski completed the scoring in the second half by
knocking home her own rebound.
