MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet won the 8th Congressional District race representing mid-Michigan. She won against her opponent, Paul Junge, a Republican.

"I am honored by the trust of our neighbors to represent mid-Michigan in the U.S. House," said McDonald-Rivet in a press release. "We won this race with a broad and energized coalition, and I am grateful to the tens of thousands of people who voted, volunteered, and donated. We showed that even amidst negativity and attack ads, we can come together as a community with a positive vision for our region. "

She will be the first woman to represent mid-Michigan in the U.S. House.

McDonald Rivet celebrated her winnings in Saginaw at U.A Local 85's hall on election night, Nov. 5.

Paul Junge, her opponent, said in a statement:

"It has been a great honor to run for congress here in Michigan's Eighth Congressional District. Looking back at the last ten months since I began this campaign, I'm humbled to have had the opportunity to meet and learn from so many of our amazing residents... I want to congratulate Senator Rivet and wish her the best of luck."
