La Serna, Rio Hondo Prep learn opponents for CIF State football playoffs

After winning CIF Southern Section football championships over the weekend, La Serna and Rio Hondo Prep are headed to the CIF State football playoffs, learning their opponents for this week’s Southern California regional championships .

  • La Serna (11-3), who defeated Corona del Mar, 49-29, to claim the CIF-SS Division 4 title and the school’s third championship, will be at home in Friday’s CIF State Division 2-AA Southern California Regional title game against Orange Vista, who won the CIF-SS Division 5 championship.

    Orange Vista defeated Newbury Park, 55-34, to claims its first championship in school history. La Serna will host Friday’s game at 7 p.m.

    The winners will advance to the state championship against the winner between Sacramento’s Grant (11-2) and Rocklin (12-1) from the Northern 2-AA title game.

    All the state championships are in Southern California this year, and will be played at three locations, Pasadena City College, Saddleback College or El Camino College on Dec. 8-9.

    Rio Hondo Prep (13-1) won three straigtht road games in the CIF-SS Division 9 playoffs, culminating with Friday’s 29-27 victory over Santa Monica i n the championship game, stopping a game-tying two-point conversion to pull out their 15th section title. Rio Hondo Prep has the second most CIF-SS football titles, trailing only Long Beach Poly with 20.

    Rio Hondo Prep will be on the road in Saturday’s CIF State Southern California Division 4-A championship against Mission Oak (9-5) of Tulare, who won the CIF Central Section Division 3 title. Mission Oak defeated Kerman, 34-14, to win the title.

    The winners will take on either Palma of Salinas (6-7) or Hughson (9-3) from the Northern Division 4-A regional final in the state championship.
