Lady Aggies off to hot start

A.Smith3 months ago

Poteet has gotten off to a rolling start this season, winning four of their first five matchups including back-to-back home victories.

After trailing for the majority of the game, the Lady Aggies allowed just seven points in the second half of their 28-23 win over Three Rivers.

“I liked our team’s resilience,” said Lady Aggies head coach Sam Treviño. “That first half, we were kind of all over the place and I was trying to change it up a little bit. We went from the full court press and the half court press just for a changeup, and it was effective. So we’ve tried to just stick with it.

Aniyah Pequeño led the team with nine points and 14 rebounds to go with five steals. The senior also had a big fourth quarter including the go-ahead layup to put her team up 22-21 with just a few minutes left. Galli Hernandez had an impressive eight steals along with eight points and five rebounds. She also knocked down a pair of free throws late to help put the game away.

Experience may not favor the Lady Aggies this season but that hasn’t appeared to have an effect late in games.

“Our team is young, but again, we are resilient. A lot of the games that we’ve played so far have been very similar in style, kind of fast-paced and close. It’s gonna come down to who can be the most disciplined, make the least amount of mistakes in crunch time and fortunately, today we were able to be that team,” said Treviño.

Poteet followed up the victory over Three Rivers with a win over Charlotte Tuesday afternoon, 58-32. The Lady Aggies will host La Pryor Nov. 28 at 5 p.m.
