WEST PITTSTON — Justin Cornell and Tyler McGovern combined on a two-hitter and Zack Yursha went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead Lake-Lehman to a 3-1 win over Meyers Monday at Atlas Field.
The win gave the Black Knights their second straight Wyoming Valley Conference Division II title as well as the No. 1 seed in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.
Lake-Lehman (14-1) will host No. 16 Carbondale in the opening round of the playoffs on Wednesday. Meyers (13-2) will take the No. 2 seed and host rival GAR on Wednesday.
Monday’s game was scoreless through three as Cornell and Meyers’ John Nargoski controlled the game on the mound. It was Nargoski’s first appearance back on the mound since April 18 after missing most of the regular season with an injury.
Yursha broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single with one out. McGovern then scored from third on a heads-up play while Yursha was caught in a rundown.
Cornell had faced the minimum through 5 2/3 innings before Ross Lavan drew a walk to extend the sixth. Joe DiMaggio then sent a line drive into the outfield that got past a diving Lehman fielder for an RBI triple that made it 2-1.
The Knights got some insurance in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring double by Yursha.
After a walk to open the seventh, McGovern took over on the mound and proceeded to strike out the side for the save.
