LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man stabbed his neighbor to death at a downtown apartment complex after an argument over loud music, police said.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15 at around 10:20 p.m., officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to an apartment complex near N. 9th Street and E. Ogden Avenue after reports of a man stabbing another man to death .

Arriving officers were directed to the apartment where the suspect, Ulysses Simpson Grant, 76, was located, according to the arrest report. Officers ordered Grant out of the residence and took him into custody, police said.

After police took Grant into custody, officers found the victim, later identified as Marcus Johnson, suffering from "an apparent sharp force injury to his upper torso" in another apartment. Medical personnel pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.

While Grant was in custody, he told officers he was sorry for what he did, adding he "whooped [Johnson's] [expletive]," but did not mean to kill him, the report stated. Grant was also heard yelling, "I cut the mother [expletive] up."

Surveillance video showed Grant walking to Johnson's apartment while reaching toward his waistband. About a minute later, the video showed Grant leaving the apartment with a knife in his hand, according to the report.

A witness told police that he heard "loud arguing" coming from outside his apartment. He said it sounded like Johnson and Grant making threats to each other. The witness said he heard Johnson say "Man, what you gonna do" followed by, "What did you do to me?" before Grant left the apartment holding a knife, the report stated.

He left his apartment and saw Johnson trying to block Grant or move him out of the way so he could shut his door, police said. The witness told police he saw Johnson's neck and stomach were covered in blood and Johnson asked him to call the police before he fell to the ground.

Grant told police that when he came home, he could hear loud music coming from Johnson's apartment. He said he was still upset from earlier in the evening when the two got into an argument over beer so he confronted Johnson, the report stated.

Grant said Johnson said something that made him "explode" so he grabbed a knife from his bedroom and went back to Johnson's apartment. He told police that he "cut" Johnson, but could not remember how. He also told police he did not want to hurt Johnson and was sorry he killed him.

Grant faces charges of open murder with a deadly weapon and burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon. His next court appearance was scheduled for Oct. 22.
