Learning about star knowledge

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Bright young minds got the chance to learn astronomy at the Abrams Planetarium in East Lansing on Saturday.

Kids ages 8 to 12 years old who are a part of the Spartan Young Astronomers Club visit the planetarium on the first Saturday of every month to learn about different areas of astronomy.

This month the students learned about star knowledge from around the world by listening to stories through short planetarium shows and other activities.

"So this is a lot of fun because we do a lot of in-depth dives into different astronomy topics and we do a bunch of different things," said Shannon Schmol the Director of Abrams Planetarium. "So we might talk about star knowledge and star lore we might talk about the supernova one time, black holes another, and then planets another time. So it's a great chance to really Dive into these different ideas that maybe might not be as accessible all the time in everyday life and lots of activities to get kids excited about science and wanting to learn."

The Spartan Young Astronomers Club will meet again on the Aug 3, and students will go learn about meteors and asteroids.
