Lehman tops GAR

WILKES-BARRE — Jimmy Stuart rushed for 132 yards and Nick Eury scored two touchdowns as Lake-Lehman defeated GAR 21-6 Saturday night in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2A game at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.

Stuart helped Lehman (4-2) distance itself in the third quarter with an 18-yard TD run at 7:21. The extra point gave the Black Knights a 14-6 lead.

“He’s not a blazing speed type of kid,” Lehman coach Jerry Gilsky said. “He’s short in stature so he is a very good leverage runner. He’s very patient on the jet sweeps.”

GAR fumbled on its next possession, with Lehman linebacker Kody Pachamovitch tiptoeing the sideline after catching the ball in the air. Lehman then went 27 yards, aided by a roughing the passer penalty on a third-and-11, for another touchdown.

Eury capped the quick drive with a 6-yard run at 3:38 of the third.

Eury also scored the Black Knights’ first touchdown on a 39-yard TD pass from Josh Sayre. Sayre had his best game throwing of the season in the run-oriented offense. He completed 6 of 9 attempts for 82 yards.

GAR (3-3) scored first when Garry Kroll connected with Greg Skrepenak on a 22-yard touchdown pass at 2:50 of the second quarter. The point-after kick was deflected wide right by a Lehman player.

The Grenadiers, though, couldn’t get their offense going in the second half. Running back Anthony Maurent, who entered the weekend as the leading rusher in WVC Division 2A, finished with 56 yards on 15 carries.

The game was delayed in the fourth quarter after GAR defensive back Sa’id Abdul-Qayir was injured making a tackle. He was taken to the hospital, but was alert and able to move his legs. A GAR coach said Abdul-Qayir felt some tightness in his neck.
