Letter: Make no mistake: Ciscomani opposed the border-security package

Editor,

Republican Senator James Lankford said, "Politics won out over policy," reported Emily Bregel in the Arizona Daily Star, Feb. 7, 2024. Lankford was commenting on Republicans' failure to even debate the bipartisan border-security package.

Too many are defending Juan Ciscomani by saying that he didn't vote against the border-security package. He didn't have a chance to vote one way or the other because his own party, under the direction of Trump, refused to take up the bill.

Ciscomani was more than willing to go along with Trump's desire to obstruct the border-security bill so that they could continue to demonize immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. When Ciscomani ran for the House two years ago, he railed about border security but lacked the courage to stand up to Trump. Perhaps he remembers what Trump did to Arizona's courageous and truly conservative former Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain.
