Letter to the editor: Updated legislative maps just a start

J.Lee9 hr ago

There is a sea change happening in Madison. The maps we are voting under have been improved from the highly gerrymandered Republican maps which resulted in more seats for Republicans despite Democrats getting far more votes.

While they are fairer, the maps have now only been returned to a status where voters will select their representatives rather than representatives selecting their voters. They no longer benefit either party as much as they did before.

With Tod Ohnstad retiring after a commendable 12 year career In Madison it is vital that Democrats field the strongest candidate possible to take the baton from him.

With Robin Vos doing everything in his power to strip Governor Evers of power the loss of that 65th District seat would be traumatic.

Republicans like Vos and Steil and Trump have declared war on women, voting rights, the environment, minorities and justice.

Votes of feel-good passion must give way to votes that will position the Democrats to protect the courts, reverse the massive Republican transfer of wealth to the ultra-wealthy and provide for the smoothest transition to younger generations so they can enjoy all that our country and state have to offer.

Now is the time to elect a successor for Ohnstad who can retain the seat so Democrats can continue the good work Tod has been doing for the people of Kenosha's 65th assembly district.

Ronald Stevens, Kenosha
