LOWVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – Lewis County officials are trying to combat a recent wave of trashy behavior.

The Lewis County Solid Waste Transfer Station, which is located at 7952 State Route 26 in Lowville, has been reporting problems with residents leaving the transfer station without paying for the items they disposed of.

Kip Turck, who is Director of Solid Waste, said that they are taking many precautions to stop people from doing this in the future.

A high-definition camera system has been installed that allows officials to capture the license plates on every vehicle that comes in and out of the facility. Anyone not paying for trash dumping is then reported to local authorities.

According to Turck, there have had roughly a dozen people drive off without paying in a month and he state it must stop.

We do not want to make these changes, but since we are an enterprise system and rely on this income to keep our doors open, we feel we have no choice.

Transfer station employees will be working with local authorities to stem the tide of this problem. They want to remind everyone to stop into the office to pay for trash disposals before leaving the facility.

The Lowville transfer station is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., 8 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.
