Nov. 4—The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded the Lewis County Public Utility District (PUD) a $4.8 million grant to install a fiber-to-the-premises network to provide access to 1,152 residents and 16 businesses.

In an announcement Thursday, the agency said the grant was part of $63.8 million it had awarded through its Community Connect Program to expand high-speed internet in rural areas across 12 states.

"The Biden-Harris Administration is investing in rural communities, including those in Washington, to ensure access to high-speed internet. We know this is fundamental to building prosperity and a bright future where people and businesses can grow and thrive," said Helen Price Johnson, state director for USDA Rural Development in Washington state. "Rural Americans have immense potential, but without reliable internet, it's challenging to fully reach it. These awards will open new pathways to education, jobs, and healthcare which will provide opportunities and strengthen our communities."

Across Washington, the USDA will invest more than $11.5 million in three projects that will bring high-speed internet to 2,347 residents in the Island, Lewis, Pacific and Spokane counties.

In Lewis County, residents will have access to speeds up to 100 mbps symmetrical. The project also includes a community center at Lewis County Fire District No. 11 in Pe Ell that will offer free internet access for at least two years.

The Community Connect Program extends internet service into rural areas less likely to be served commercially.

A Lewis County PUD spokesperson told The Chronicle more details will be announced in a news release later this week.
